"Last Night At The Jetty" b/w "Drone"
Four years after his last release on FatCat (the stunning "Bros" 12", which preceded his widely acclaimed Person
Pitch album), Animal Collective"s Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox) returns with this brilliant two track 7" vinyl-only
release. Limited to just 3,000 copies for the whole world, the single comes as part of a series of four singles to
be released on four separate labels (FatCat, Domino, Kompakt, and Animal Collective's own Paw Tracks label),
which will later be released as a full length album (entitled Tomboy) on Paw Tracks. Each 7" comes in a limited,
once-only pressing of just 3,000 copies for the world.
Coming at the mid-point of this series, the two tracks delivered to FatCat highlight Panda Bear's quality as a songwriter, singer and producer. The lead track, 'Last Night At The Jetty' sees Noah's beautifully layered, honeyed vocal harmonies morphing across a fairly simple grid of wobbly guitar, a whip-crack metronome-beat and a scattering of electronic sounds and effects. Taking an uncluttered, less-is-more approach, the treatment allows Noah's voice to carry the song through a series of shifting melodies. On the flipside, 'Drone' takes an even more reductive, minimalist approach, jettisoning the beat altogether with Noah's long-held vocals hovering over a step-sequence of synthesized tone-blocks, a kind of computer-music chorale.
